A Brief History of The Potomac Squash Club

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE POTOMAC SQUASH CLUB

Today’s club was first owned and operated as the Seven Locks Athletic Club, Inc., a corporation formed under Maryland law in November 1967. In January 1968, the owner of the property, Seven Locks Properties, a limited partnership formed under Maryland law and itself owned by the original five backers including the Kettler Brothers, entered into an agreement with Seven Locks Athletic Club, Inc. to lease the club’s facilities. The amenities included two American size courts and one doubles squash court, a steam room, and an outdoor basketball court. The term of the lease was one year at a monthly rent of $700, and the lease was automatically renewable from year to year. In 1971, the club had 100 members and was looking to add 20 more, and at that time there was a separate charge for lockers and guest fees.

In October 1971, the name of the club was changed to Potomac Racket Club, Inc. and it purchased the property from the Kettler Brothers limited partnership. In March 1972, the IRS granted tax exempt status to the Potomac Racket Club, Inc. under Section 501(c)(1) of the IRC. Under the sale, title to the property was transferred from Seven Locks Properties to Potomac Racket Club, Inc. In October 1972, the name of the club was changed for a third time to Potomac Squash Club, Inc. Potomac Squash Club, Inc, which is also a tax exempt corporation under Section 501(c)(7), took out a 20-year mortgage to purchase the building from the partnership for $55,000 with Riggs National Bank of Washington, DC, and the club executed a ground lease with Kettler Brothers, Inc. for the 2.6 acres of land. Today, the club owns the land and building outright.
